FIRST DAY OF CLASS FOR FUTURE PILOTS
Published on 30th September 2019

The first group of students will today begin ground school training at the Qantas Group Pilot Academy in Toowoomba, Queensland.

The Academy is part of the Qantas Group’s strategy to build a long-term talent pipeline for its own airlines and
to help the broader industry meet the expected demand for up to 790,000 pilots in the next 20 years, with one
third of them required in the Asia Pacific.

QantasLink Chief Executive John Gissing said the first day of class was an exciting moment for students and
an important milestone for the Academy.

“The Qantas Group Pilot Academy was born out of a need to create the next generation of Australian pilots
and together with our partners, we’re very excited to welcome the first intake here today,” Mr Gissing said.

“These 12 students will be the first in a long line of future pilots to study at the Academy, with plans to train up
to 250 aviators each year in Toowoomba.

“These students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and have all demonstrated a strong passion for
aviation with the skills and attitude necessary to become great pilots.

“Throughout their course, these students will have access to world-class training and mentoring from some of
the Qantas Group’s most senior pilots.”

The students were selected after a rigorous two-month application process involving interviews, as well as
pilot aptitude and core skills tests.

The first day of class kicks off a 52-week intensive training course with theoretical and practical components
that will see the students gain multiple qualifications.

After completing their training in October 2020, the graduates will join the Qantas Group’s pilot talent pool, as
well as have access to opportunities with partners to assist in their placement in the aviation industry.

The first group of students will be accommodated at the University of Southern Queensland ahead of the
official opening of the Academy and its new facilities early next year.
